Serious Sam 3: BFE a game produced by croteam and published by Devolver Studios in 2011. The game will take the player through hordes of aliens, thousands of bullets and the back streets Cairo. Combat is always intense and challenging which always leaves the player satisfied.
Serious Sam 3: BFE is set before the happenings of the first title Serious Sam: The First Encounter, which was released in 2001. Set in the 22nd Century, Earth has been invaded by aliens and there is only one man who can stop them. The game will take Sam through various location throughout Egypt, on a bloody gruesome crusade for sake of humanity.
Playing Serious Sam 3 is straightforward; while following the basic rules of most shooters, it still does not lack in player entertainment. Throughout the game the player is able to collect and utilize a selection of 13 weapons. There are a few changes, like the nostalgic chainsaw of Serious Sam: The First Encounter has been replaced with a sledge hammer. Not all change is bad though as the game has now incorporated iron sight views into it combat mechanics. What struck me as a little odd though was the mechanics behind sprinting, the Player could sprint for as long as want but could not shoot. This lead to a bit of difficulty when have to make a break and maintain some sort of attack to repel the enemies.
While having extremely bettered the graphics from the older game, the developers have left out some of physic systems that would be seen in a modern shooter like Call Of Duty. The omission of elements like weapon recoil and projectile spread, have left the game reminiscent of the old school run and gun shooters like DOOM. This gives the player an advantage over their enemies, and pushes the player to adapt a more casual play style. Seemingly endless waves of enemies will be hurdled and blood will be shed, but every second of Serious Sam 3: BFE is worth it.
Serious Sam 3: BFE, as much as it sounds, is not perfect. The game runs low on narrative and can become quite repetitive after a while. Most missions objectives are to make it from point a to b, and on the journey you will encounter thousands of enemies. There were also a few instances where in using the sledgehammer an enemy would begin attacking during my attack animation and would hit me with no chance of evasion. So yes, the hyped graphics on an essentially classic video game is a sight for sore eyes, but it can easily become just another game in your library.
So if you are looking for a few hours of mindless violence, witty one-liners, and endless hordes of aliens, Serious Sam 3: BFE will bode well. Get Sam through Egypt and take back Earth, there’s no drought of ammunition or creatures to slay.
